Knowledge about the phenomena that govern the biological processes in wastewater treatment plants and more strict effluent criteria lead to continued research and developments in the field. Nitrogen and phosphorous removal processes which were not so long ago found in only a few treatment plants, are now a common feature of modern treatment plants all over the world.
