Tommy Smith's Animals

Tommy Smith is a young boy with a habit of being cruel to the creatures he finds in the garden and woods. From throwing stones at birds to seting his dog on rats, he sees animals as targets for mischief rather than living beings. His behavior reaches a breaking point, leading the local wildlife to call a secret meeting in the moonlit woods. Under the guidance of a wise owl, the animals decide on a unique punishment: they will speak to Tommy in his own language. One by one, the animals approach him to explain their clever habits, their vital roles in the ecosystem, and their personal struggles for survival. As Tommy listens to the frog, the rook, the hare, and the mole, his perspective begins to shift from thoughtless aggression to genuine respect for the natural world. This classic work uses a conversational approach to present natural history. It moves beyond simple facts by giving voice to the creatures themselves, allowing the reader to see the world through their eyes. The book focuses on the idea of stewardship and the inherent value of every living thing. It encourages children to observe the outdoors with curiosity and kindness. By highlighting the intelligence and utility of common British wildlife, the story fosters a sense of wonder and a desire to protect the environment..
