In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Hull was one of Englands largest seaports and, as such, was an important business and tourist destination. Detailed guide books, such as Blacks Guide to Yorkshire, were available to help visitors make the most of their stay. Blacks was updated each year and included historical facts about local towns and villages, where to stay, what to see and excursions to places of interest. This 55 page booklet combines text relating to Hull and the surrounding area from Blacks Guide to Yorkshire, published in 1888, with photographs taken from postcards and magic lantern projection slides owned by the Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive. It is in three parts. The first is twenty eight photographs, mostly taken between 1890 and 1920, of Hull, Beverley and Hornsea; the second a visitors guide to Hull with sections on Beverley, its Minster and Hornsea and references to villages in the area. The third part is a history and general description of Yorkshire. The text for parts two and three is reproduced from the 1888 guide-book. The text and the photographs complement each other and enable us to travel back in time to visit this important British port and the surrounding area.
