The Missing Race

What happens when the identity you have always known does not fit into the box America gives you?The Missing Race: We Matter Too. confronts one of the most overlooked questions facing Hispanic Americans: Who has the power to define who we are?For generations, Hispanic and Latino Americans have been asked to identify their ethnicity separately from their race-often forcing millions of people to choose categories that may not fully reflect how they understand themselves. Kris Elizondo explores the history behind that system, the consequences of being misunderstood in government data, and the growing debate over recognition, representation, political power, and self-identification.This is not an argument that every Hispanic American shares one race, ancestry, or identity. Hispanic America is extraordinarily diverse. Instead, The Missing Race asks a deeper question: Should the people being classified have a meaningful role in defining themselves? From the history of Census classification and the "Some Other Race" category to voting rights, redistricting, healthcare, civil rights, and the future of American demographic policy, Elizondo challenges readers to examine a system that has shaped how millions of people are counted-and whether that system still reflects the people it was created to describe. This is more than a debate about a box on a form. It is about recognition. Representation. Power. And the right to define ourselves. We are Hispanic Americans. Our history matters. Our identity matters. Our future matters. It's time America asks the question it has avoided for far too long:When America counts us, does America truly see us?We refuse to accept any thing else from here on out. We make up a very important part of this country's history and we refuse to not be seen any longer. This book gives you the full detail on where it all began and where we're trying to make it go.
