Space and Place

The articles in this collection were first published in the journal New Formations between 1987 and 1991. They take as their focus the notions of identity and location, belonging and displacement.During the period in which these pieces were written the presumed certainties of cultural identity, firmly located in particular places which housed stable cohesive communities of shared tradition and perspective, though never a reality for some, were increasingly disrupted and displaced for all. Places are no longer the clear supports of our identity. Themes of cultural belonging, of home and exile, are explored through the diverse prisms of colonialism, national identity and urban experiences.Space & Place forms a valuable contribution to an emerging social and symbolic geography which is one of the most exciting aspects of today's cultural studies.
