Die Etappen von Rembrandts Karriere, von der ersten Zeit in Leiden über die frühen bis zu den späten Jahren in Amsterdam, spiegelt die künstlerischen und intellektuellen Entwicklungen seines Jahrhunderts wider.Nachdem er sein Studium in Leiden abgebrochen hatte, nahm der junge Rembrandt Malunterricht und gründete schließlich ein eigenes Atelier. Charakteristisch für die Leidener Periode sind biblische Themen wie Die Auferweckung des Lazarus, doch auch die Wurzeln seiner Porträtkunst, die er mit intensiven Studien von Physiognomien vorantrieb, reichen bis in jene Jahre zurück. Später, in Amsterdam, genoss Rembrandt aufgrund der Perfektion seiner Bildnisse die Gunst zahlreicher Auftraggeber, doch bald schon übertraf der Künstler alle Erwartungen. Rembrandt ging weit über traditionelle Darstellungsformen hinaus und komponierte seine Porträts auf die gleiche Weise, wie er bereits seine szenischen Bilder konstruiert hatte.
