During the conference, Puritan leader Dr. John Reynolds, asked King James that the best way to cooperate for the advancement of Church life and doctrine would be to give the people a new and more correct translation of the Scriptures, correcting a series of altered and corrupted points in the Bibles allowed in the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI. King James was very pleased with the idea and in July 1604 appointed 54 men who formed a translation committee. These men were not only the best linguists and greatest scholars in their kingdom, but considered, at the time, the most capable in the world. Much of the work and methodology of these men, applied to the translation of the King James Bible, formed the basis of the most important linguistic and translational studies, still used today in major universities worldwide.
