There is a particular kind of frustration that comes from caring deeply about something you cannot easily see. Carbon dioxide is invisible. Climate change, for most of us, is something that happens somewhere else, to someone else, someday in the future. I built Decarbonr because I wanted to make the invisible visible. I wanted to give people a way to connect their everyday choices - the steak on their plate, the flight they were about to book, the smartphone they just upgraded - to numbers that meant something. Not to shame anyone. Not to moralize. But to illuminate. What I discovered, in the process of building that app and researching the emission factors behind every food item, every car, every appliance, was that this information existed but it was scattered. It lived in academic papers, in government databases, in lifecycle assessment reports that no ordinary person would ever read. The research was there. The accessibility was not. This book is my attempt to fix that. Everything in these pages is grounded in peer-reviewed science - primarily the landmark 2018 study by Joseph Poore and Thomas Nemecek, which analyzed 38,700 farms across 119 countries and became the most comprehensive food lifecycle assessment ever published. I have supplemented that foundation with data from the IPCC, the International Energy Agency, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the European Environment Agency, and dozens of other authoritative sources. But data alone does not change behavior. What changes behavior is understanding - and a sense of agency. So I have written this book not as a scientific treatise but as a practical companion. I want you to finish each chapter feeling not guilty but empowered. Not overwhelmed but oriented. The math of carbon is not complicated once you see the landscape clearly, and once you see it, you cannot unsee it - in the best possible way. The Paris Agreement asks each of us, on average, to live within a carbon budget of 2 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year by mid-century. Most people in the developed world currently emit five to seventeen times that amount. The gap is enormous. But the path is clear, and it runs directly through the choices we make about what we eat, how we travel, how we heat our homes, and what we buy.
