Where The Steam Settles: Last Ember Bathhouse Chronicles — Book Three

The crown has withdrawn-for now. But the reprieve is thin as steam, and everyone at the Last Ember Bathhouse knows it. Wren Alderwick has one week to deliver a formal assessment that could determine the sanctuary's fate forever. And this time, she refuses to carry the burden alone. When the crown's alchemists arrive with gleaming instruments and cold skepticism, Wren meets them not with defiance, but with something far more dangerous: honesty. She shows them the truth she once feared to name-that the magic of the springs is inseparable from the people who tend them. Strip away the community, the care, the gentleness, and the water becomes nothing more than mineral heat. The crown cannot bottle what it does not understand. But even as the evidence mounts, the crown's interest does not fade. A bureaucratic letter arrives, withdrawing the immediate requisition but leaving the door open for future seizure. The bathhouse is safe today. Tomorrow is another matter entirely.Wren, Corvin, Hesper, Mira, and Vesper refuse to wait for the next blow. Together, they begin the impossible: a petition for protected sanctuary status, a process designed to exhaust petitioners into surrender. Yet for the first time, Wren is not fighting alone. Corvin offers testimony from fifteen years of service. Hesper brings forty years of records. Mira shapes their truths into the crown's own language. And Vesper reveals centuries of history the mountain has kept hidden. As the petition grows, so does something else-Wren's courage to want a future she once believed she didn't deserve. A cottage. A garden. Mornings with Corvin. A life built not from usefulness, but from choosing and being chosen. But before she can claim that future, Wren must face the woman she once was-the exhausted, frightened alchemist who built a compound that hurt children. In the mirror-steam ritual, she meets her past self fully for the first time, not to relive the pain, but to finally forgive the person who believed she had no choice. Only then can she step into the life she is building now.Where the Steam Settles is a story of reclamation, community, and the courage to stop running from your own heart. It is the culmination of a journey that began on a mountain road, where a broken alchemist collapsed and found a sanctuary that taught her how to breathe again. The crown may return. The future may shift. But Wren is no longer the woman who flinches at the sound of hoofbeats. She is someone rebuilt by gentleness, strengthened by truth, and held by a household that refuses to let her carry anything alone. And whatever comes next, she is ready.
