When We See Us

A major study of Black figurative art from Africa and the African diaspora, this publication traces a century of representation from the early 20th century to today. Published to accompany a major exhibition at Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, it offers a comprehensive exploration of Black self-representation through portraiture and figuration. The book foregrounds Black subjectivity and Black consciousness from Pan-African and Pan-Diasporic perspectives, focusing on representational painting to show how artists have imagined, memorialized and asserted African and diasporic experiences across the 20th century and into the 21st. It situates artistic practice within broader histories of Pan-Africanism, Civil Rights, African Liberation and Independence movements, and the struggles against apartheid, while addressing Decoloniality and Black Lives Matter as contemporary frameworks for discussion.
