When The Waters Stood

The plagues are over. The firstborn are dead. And Egypt has finally let the Hebrews go. But freedom is not a destination - it is a road, and the road runs straight into the sea. The mixed multitude that leaves Egypt is not a nation but a crowd: freed slaves, Egyptian defectors, the wounded, the grieving, and the ones who carry the damage of ten plagues in their bones. They have no rank, no order, and no idea what lies ahead. Behind them, Pharaoh's heart has hardened one last time, and the chariots are already rolling. The story is told through the witnesses who crossed the water and the ones who did not. Nefira, a woman of the mixed multitude with no rank and no people to claim her, clings to the two children she has sworn to protect. Merit and Shira, the record-keepers who have chronicled every plague, now record the flight itself. Menna, an Egyptian officer, receives the order to pursue and must decide what he is willing to do to a people he has watched suffer. And Hori, a charioteer who has served Pharaoh all his life, rides into the corridor of the sea and toward the end of everything he knows. As the waters part and the dry ground appears, the crowd walks between two walls of the sea - and the army that has never lost a battle follows them in. What happens next will be sung for generations. But the song is not the whole story. Because the crossing was a miracle. But the days after it - the silence, the grief, the discarded armor, and the question of what a people becomes when it is finally free - belonged to everyone who walked out of the water.
