When the River Turned: 1

Orra trusts what can be measured. Its gates obey their schedules, its river keeps its course, and the Office of Continuity decides which future is safe enough to become real. Then Dena Vos hears knocking behind the Ninth Gate-a gate sealed since the disaster that killed her father. By morning, the river is running backward. Streets appear where none were built. Strangers emerge carrying memories of lives Orra insists never happened. Behind one impossible door, Dena sees the father she buried eight years ago.The Office calls these people manifestations: dangerous remnants of futures correctly discarded. Its orders are simple-close the gate, restore the current, and do not ask who will vanish when the city returns to normal. But Dena is a gatewright. She knows every barrier is built by someone, and every seal hides a choice. To save Orra from the rising water, she may have to open the one gate no one was meant to touch. To save the people the city refuses to count, she may have to break the future itself.
