Whatever You Do Instead of Saying Things

"I'm fine," Soren said. He was standing in a hedge.Soren keeps fire at arm's length; one scar taught him that fire forgives no one, not its enemies, not its fuel, not its handler. Mara talks the way other people breathe and draws the things she can't say. Theo reads the room, the syllabus, and the three of them, and says nothing about any of it.Drawn together across one college town by a law older than any of them - like calls to like - they get a year of the ordinary thing: Thursday dinners, kept secrets, a borrowed field at the edge of town where they can be what they are without explaining it.Then the universe shows its ledger. The three of them are corners of a balance that holds creation level, and the fourth corner is on its way to claim itself. They'd rather fight a war than say what they feel out loud. The universe, unfortunately, is offering both.```
