What We Were Told

Everyone remembered the same family. Nobody remembered the same story. For more than forty years, Michelle Turner has carried fragments of a childhood no one else seemed willing to believe.A frightened boy named Michael.A hidden structure behind the family home.Adults speaking in lowered voices.A father who protected his family by controlling what they were allowed to know. And a disappearance Michelle was eventually taught to blame on her own unreliable memory. When private investigator Ryder "Talon" Stone begins reconstructing the Turner family's past, he discovers something far more complicated than a forgotten childhood secret.Michelle was wrong about some things. She was also right about far more than anyone admitted. As Ryder separates memory from evidence, assumption from fact, and protection from control, the investigation reaches from 1980s Sarasota into the present-and exposes a family history shaped by disputed parentage, hidden records, carefully managed identities, institutional access, and adults who each believed they were protecting a child. But the deeper Ryder goes, the more dangerous one question becomes: What happens when the story everyone accepted was built from real facts arranged in the wrong order? What We Were Told is a psychological investigative suspense novel about memory, family loyalty, childhood credibility, buried identity, and the difference between finding the truth and earning the right to possess it.Because sometimes the most damaging family secret is not what happened. It is what everyone was told it meant.
