What We Leave Out

We understand the world by making it smaller.We select what matters, group differences together, use names, measurements, thresholds, models, and expectations, then act before everything can be known.Usually this works.Sometimes what was left outside turns out to be the part that mattered.What We Leave Out is a short philosophical inquiry into relevance, categories, gradients, identity, and the unavoidable compression behind ordinary understanding.It asks what happens when a useful category becomes the person it describes, when information about a population becomes a judgment about one member, when a sharp threshold is placed over a gradual reality, and when one moment in a life is allowed to stand for the whole person.This is not an argument against simplifying the world. We could not function without doing so. The harder problem is knowing when a simplification is doing its job-and when something it excluded deserves another look.
