When Gladis Nguete hit rock bottom, she wasn't even surprised. Years of burying trauma had finally caught up with her. She had built an impressive life-rising from a small rural town in Cameroon to proudly serve in the U.S. Air Force-but success couldn't quiet the ache inside. Spiraling into depression, she checked herself into a mental health facility to keep from ending her life. To heal, she would have to face what she had long tried to forget.Her youth in Cameroon was marked by sexual abuse and domestic violence. Despite this, she worked hard to succeed: at school, at friendships, and at romance. Her perseverance paid off in academic achievements, what seemed like true love, and the chance for a wider horizon abroad. Immigrating alone to America brought her opportunities she had never dreamed of, yet something dark still remained inside her. She leaned on her faith, her work, and her family, but it wasn't enough.Her breakdown tested her more than military training ever had. It would take all her resolve to understand what brought her to this brink of despair and find a way to recover. With therapy and support, she began to name what had once been unspeakable: shame, loss, regret, and sadness.Writing became her lifeline. It helped her process grief and rediscover joy. Despite the difficult journey, she created a new toolkit for her life by reclaiming her African heritage, her faith, and her community.
