Mwaka 2004 Profesa Wangari Maathai, kiongozi wa chama cha kuhifadhi mazingira (Green Belt Movement) nchini Kenya, alitunukiwa tuzo ya Amani ya Nobel kutokana na mchango wake mkubwa katika harakati za kupigana amani, demokrasia, utawala bora, matumizi sahihi ya mazingira na rasilimali kwa manufaa ya kizazi hiki na vizazi vijayo kote ulimwenguni.
