Voces de Aztlán

Provides students with a selection of primary and secondary sources that explore the rich, influential, and important histories of Chicana/o peoples in the US. The volume is organised chronologically, beginning with coverage of early Mesoamerican cultures and concluding with a discussion of Mexicans and the American Civil War. Voces de Aztlán: A Chicana/o History Reader, Vol. 1 provides students with a selection of primary and secondary sources that explore the rich, influential, and important histories of Chicana/o peoples in the United States. The volume is organized chronologically into nine chapters, beginning with coverage of early Mesoamerican cultures and concluding with a discussion of Mexicans and the American Civil War. Interstitial chapters explore the rise of Aztec civilization, Spanish contact and conflict, and colonial society in New Spain. Students also learn about Franciscan missions as an early form of mass incarceration, slavery along the Texas-Mexico border, and the removal of Indigenous peoples in the U.S. Together, these rich sources provide students with a new, broader perspective on the history of the United States.
