Violent crimes committed against children

This research examined the ethical framework underpinning expert witness practice in child victim court proceedings. The study explored the responsibilities of experts who provide specialised evidence in matters involving child abuse, trauma, victimisation, and child protection, with particular emphasis on maintaining objectivity, impartiality, and professional integrity. Key ethical principles identified included competence, transparency, accountability, and the prioritisation of the best interests of the child, while also examining challenges such as bias, role conflict, and the interpretation of forensic evidence. The research highlighted the significant influence expert testimony can have on judicial outcomes and emphasised the importance of rigorous assessment methodologies, evidence-based practice, and adherence to professional standards. The findings concluded that ethically grounded expert evidence is essential to safeguarding the rights of children, supporting fair judicial decision-making, and ensuring that courts receive independent, balanced, and reliable professional opinions.
