In 1909, vigilantes in Ada, Oklahoma, hanged four men from the rafters of a livery stable. The lynching gave rise to enduring myths that shaped the community's understanding of its past for more than a century. Those myths also influenced later responses to a series of wrongful convictions that emerged during the 1980s and beyond. Vigilantes, Lawmen and Hanging Men challenges long-held interpretations of the lynching while placing Ada's experience within the broader history of vigilantism and other extralegal efforts to impose order across the American South and West. More than the history of one notorious event or the injustices that followed, this book examines how communities remember-and sometimes misremember-their past. It explores the persistent gap between America's professed ideals and the historical practices that have too often justified violence, tolerated illegal methods in the pursuit of order, and sustained systemic injustice. Forty interwoven poems add emotional depth and a deeply human dimension to this story of violence, myth, memory, and the continuing search for justice.
