After earning his Ph.D. in Persian Literature from the University of Tehran, he taught there for many years and later served as a visiting professor at the University of California and Princeton University.He authored numerous influential works on Persian history, literature, and literary criticism, including *Two Centuries of Silence*, *The Sea in the Pitcher*, *Through the Alley of the Libertines*, *The Record of Islam*, and *The Passing of Days*. His best-known work, *Two Centuries of Silence*, remains a landmark study of Iran's history during the first two centuries following the Arab conquest.
