to Have Less is More of the Kingdom God

To Have Less Is to Have More of the Kingdom of God is not simply a book about owning less. It begins with a deeper question: Have we discovered a treasure valuable enough to loosen our grip on the treasures we already have? The world continually tells us that we need more-more money, greater success, more recognition, and a more secure future. Yet Jesus tells of a man who discovered a treasure hidden in a field and, in his joy, sold everything he had to possess it. He did not give up everything reluctantly. He let go because he had discovered something far more valuable. For nearly thirty years, the author has served people experiencing homelessness and addiction, struggling families, and children in Paterson, New Jersey. Along the way, he began to recognize that addiction is not the only form of bondage. Money, security, recognition, success, ministry, and the desire for control can also take hold of the human heart. This led him repeatedly to one question: What treasure is valuable enough to loosen my grip on the treasures I already know? His answer is the kingdom of God.This book does not romanticize poverty or condemn possessions. Caring for our families, preparing for the future, building businesses, and developing ministries can all be responsible and faithful pursuits. The deeper question is not simply what we possess, but what possesses us.Through personal stories, Scripture, ministry experiences, failures, and struggles, the author explores how less of self can make room for more of Christ; how surrendering control can deepen our trust in God; and how loosening our grip on the treasures of this world can allow us to experience more of God's kingdom. The Christian life is not primarily about giving up treasure. It is about discovering a greater treasure. When the kingdom of God becomes our treasure, having less no longer means that we have less.We have found what is enough.
