Through the Valley

In the remote northern provinces of South Vietnam--a region of long-forgotten villages and steep hills--the U.S. Americal Division and 196th Light Infantry Brigade fought a series of battles against the North Vietnamese and Vietcong in 1967-68: Hiep Duc, Nhi Ha, Hill 406, and others. These pitched engagements, marked by fierce close combat, have gone virtually unreported in the decades since, but Col. James F. Humphries brings them into sharp focus, chronicling the efforts of these proud American units against a stubborn enemy and reconstructing what it was like to fight in Vietnam.
