The World in Flux 1940

This book is not a historical account of a war. It is an exploration of a single, pivotal year. It is a snapshot of 366 days in which the world, as it was known, was shattered and remade. The calendar turned to 1940, and with it, a sense of foreboding hung in the air, a quiet anxiety born of the so-called "Phoney War."Europe, having declared war months earlier, sat in a state of suspended animation. The bombs hadn't yet fallen, the tanks hadn't yet rolled in earnest. Yet, the foundations were crumbling. In the United States, far from the front lines, life continued with a different sort of flux-a mix of economic recovery and a fierce debate over a president seeking a third term and a nation's place in the world. It was a time of innocence and uncertainty.
