The Women who Remembered

Some stories are forgotten. Others refuse to disappear. When Arya Johnson inherits a weathered journal from her late grandmother, she expects a family heirloom. Instead, she uncovers a centuries-old mystery that will forever change her understanding of who she is-and where she comes from. The journal leads her to the women history tried to erase: Amara, a young Yoruba woman gifted with the Ojú Ìrántí-the Eye That Remembers. Blessed and burdened with the ability to witness the memories carried within people and objects, Amara becomes the first keeper of a sacred legacy. When she is captured during the transatlantic slave trade, she refuses to let her people's stories die with them. Instead, she begins a journal that will pass from mother to daughter across continents and generations. From the kingdoms of Yorubaland to the plantations of Jamaica and Saint-Domingue, through the Haitian Revolution, France, Louisiana, Brazil, and into present-day Brooklyn, each woman adds her own voice to a hidden history preserved in secret journals. Together, they form the Sacred Archive-a testament to survival, resilience, and the unbreakable power of memory. As Arya follows the trail left by her ancestors, she must uncover the scattered journals before the final pieces of her family's history are lost forever. Along the way, she discovers that the greatest inheritance is not land or wealth-but truth. The Women Who Remembered is an unforgettable multigenerational historical novel that blends African history, the transatlantic slave trade, family legacy, and magical realism into an epic story of courage, identity, and remembrance.Perfect for readers who love sweeping historical fiction, powerful family sagas, and stories in the tradition of Homegoing, The Book of Negroes, The Underground Railroad, and The Water Dancer.Because some names were stolen.
