The Woman Who Talked After Death is the story of a young woman who is brutally shot but survives in a "locked in" state yet speaks words unrelated to her surroundings. It is the unexplained phenomena of her disconnected speech that causes people around her to either exploit her condition or use it to find significance and meaning in their own lives, interpreting the words of the grievously injured woman through the lens of their own belief systems. The novel is also a symbolic narrative about violence against women and how women have persevered. The story arc begins with the small-town sheriff examining what he believes to be a murder scene before he is shocked by the fact the unresponsive shooting victim is talking. Other characters' voices relate each chapter in the narrative as they experience the injured Mirelle Sartre and seek something from her. Many believe the young woman is channeling messages from God or another higher power meant for them. Her husband comes to regret his violence against his wife and ends his life in prison. The Woman Who Talked After Death incorporates the motif of flooding, both as symbol of destruction and renewal, and directly through plot as a devastating flood drowns several nursing home patients and Sister Mary Beth. All of the flood victims' bodies, except Mirelle's, are found in the silt after the waters recede. The novel's ending relates a scene in which a young man gives a ride to an unnamed woman who has come across a field. She is wearing only a short dress that looks like a hospital gown. He gives her his sweater, a pair of his niece's old sneakers, and his money before dropping her off at a bus station. His generosity surprises and unsettles him. Mirelle is more than symbol for the atrocities done to women. The novel dips into magic realism as Mirelle inexplicably survives. The final chapter consists of only a few words as a conscious Mirelle begins to retrieve memories of her childhood.
