# THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE: A Novel of New York by David Greenberg**"For everyone who ever kept a secret to protect someone they loved, and paid for it anyway."****New York, 1997.** Danny Conti has spent his entire life in the shadow of a father he lost too soon and a Brooklyn mafia empire he never asked to inherit. Raised at a careful distance from the violence by his powerful uncle, Salvatore Conti, Danny is content fixing cars and keeping his head down. But when a looming federal RICO indictment and a failing heart force Sal to name a successor, Danny is pulled into the very center of a life he can no longer escape. As a ruthless turf war with a Brighton Beach Russian syndicate threatens to set the city on fire, Danny finds an unexpected refuge in Sophia-a smart, driven woman who makes him forget the heavy weight of his family name. But Sophia has a secret of her own: she is Sophia Reyes, the Assistant United States Attorney building the exact case designed to dismantle the Conti family forever. Buried beneath the federal wiretaps, the arson, and the shifting loyalties lies the darkest secret of all. It is the truth about what really happened on Mulberry Street in 1983, the night Danny's father was murdered. It's a secret kept for fifteen years by Frank Lupo, the consigliere who raised Danny like a son.
