The Weight of a Dog

The Second Edition of The Weight of a Dog is here! Now with illustrations!A story that stays with you - and leaves you holding a weight you never knew you'd been carrying. The world waited for non-human intelligence to arrive in a spaceship. It came twelve thousand years ago instead - wrinkled, wheezing, and absolutely refusing to leave.Seventeen-year-old Nick Constantino has just buried his father and inherited a grief no one ever taught him how to carry. The panic comes without warning now - in quiet rooms, on ordinary afternoons. Then, in his late grandfather's workshop, he meets Baloo: a sixty-pound English bulldog who watches like he's been waiting for him his whole life.Baloo doesn't fix anything. He doesn't heal anything. He simply stays - lying on a breaking boy's chest with the patient certainty of something far, far older than any animal should be.Twelve thousand years live inside that heartbeat. A single sound the world keeps losing - drowned, scattered, forgotten - and something in the dark has always made sure it stayed lost. But a dog's heart is a stubborn place to hide a thing, and Baloo has kept it beating all this time, waiting for the boy who was finally listening. For longer than history has bothered to count, something has moved through the human story unseen - a whisper at the ear of every age, steering us, shaping us, deciding how far we were ever allowed to rise. Now it has turned its attention to a grieving boy and the girl who won't leave his side. Nick and Julie have inherited a war older than memory, and only the dog asleep on Nick's chest understands what it is they've been handed. But the largest thing in this story is the smallest: a dog who decided, long ago, that he would not let go of one broken boy. Not for floods. Not for death. Not for anything.Because bulldogs are very, very good at not letting go.
