the Untouched Detective: Case of Vanishing Heirs

In the autumn of 1913, an alternate Boston is split between its public face and a hidden magical aristocracy governed by bloodline prestige and family wards. Seven young heirs from the city's most influential magical houses have vanished over six weeks without leaving bodies, ransom demands, or conventional magical signatures. Nathaniel Edward Thayer, a twenty-eight-year-old disinherited detective and Null-Seer who cannot cast magic but can forensically perceive its residues, is hired by Cecelia Lumen, the intended eighth victim who survived an attempted abduction. Alongside Aster, his ancient telepathic spirit companion, Nathaniel conducts a methodical investigation across the heirs' homes, detecting a unique residue of "suppressed potential" where their emerging abilities were forcibly closed. The investigation reveals that the victims were undergoing convergent awakening, a rare synthesis of magical capabilities crossing traditional school boundaries that threatens the established bloodline hierarchy. Nathaniel discovers that the disappearances are the work of the Veil Compact, a thirty-year-old secret society within the magical establishment led by the respected elder Aldous Vane. Supported by his twin sister Victoria, a member of the Magical Council, and Inspector Alistair Webb, Nathaniel locates the missing heirs held captive beneath an abandoned textile mill in Charlestown, where their magic is blocked by architectural crystals. Confronting Vane before the Council, Nathaniel exposes the Compact and rescues the heirs, though Vane leaves him with a cryptic warning about what Nathaniel's murdered mother, Eleanor, discovered in 1910. The case concludes with the heirs rescued and Cecelia delivering a powerful public testimony, while Nathaniel finds a hidden note prompting him to investigate the missing 1910 file.
