In 1962 Fort Wayne, eighteen-year-old Bill finds himself trapped between the promising life he once imagined and the harsh reality of industrial labor. Once drawn to education and a better future, he now struggles through exhausting factory work, difficult circumstances, and a growing sense that the path he once envisioned has been closed to him. As memories of his childhood, family, education, and happier times emerge, Bill is forced to confront the distance between who he once was and who he has become. Set against the backdrop of industrial America, The Underbelly explores class, family, ambition, work, memory, and the struggle for dignity in a world where opportunity is never equally available.
