Bol Charles Johnston (1867-1931) was an Irish writer, journalist, theosophist, linguist, naturalist, and Sanskrit scholar. Johnston He wrote numerous books on Indian philosophy, translating works from Sanskrit as well as on Theosophy. He was married to the niece of Madame Blavatsky and was involved in the development of the Theosophical Society in the United States. The Johnston's lecture The Theosophical Movement, which we propose to our readers today, was published in July 1907 in the Theosophical Quarterly. When Johnston penned The Theosophical Movement, more than three decades had elapsed since the founding of the Theosophical Society in New York. The movement, born as a catalyst for spiritual reawakening in an era dominated by Victorian materialism and rigid dogmatism, had endured fierce external persecutions, internal schisms, and the passing of its primary occult pioneer, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky. Johnston-an accomplished Sanskritist, scholar of Eastern metaphysics, and lifelong devotee of the Ancient Wisdom-offers in this essay an essential historical testimony and an esoteric appraisal of the movement's true purpose. Johnston's retrospective moves beyond mere institutional chronicle. At its core, the text draws a crucial occult distinction between the Theosophical Movement and the Theosophical Society. While the Society was a temporal vessel-inevitably vulnerable to human frailties, institutional politics, and dogmatic deviations-the Movement itself was conceived as a dynamic influx of spiritual force consciously projected into the world by the Elder Brothers of humanity, the Mahatmas or Masters of Wisdom. Its mandate was not merely psychic experimentation, but the restoration of the Archaic Wisdom-Religion (Sanātana Dharma) and the evolutionary elevation of human consciousness.
