In a 21st-century society characterised by beauty ideals and performance orientation, the concepts of disgust and shame seem to have little place. When changes in body image occur as a result of ostomy, feelings of disgust and shame come to the fore. This paper focuses on how disgust and shame are dealt with in general health and nursing care teaching in the context of ostomy care and outlines the measures and strategies that can be applied for learners, nursing staff and those affected.
