The Spy in German Uniform: A Dual-Language Historical Novel English and

Fred Mayer escaped Nazi Germany once. In 1945, he returned wearing its uniform.Mayer and Hans Wijnberg are young Jewish refugees who have found a new country-and a new purpose-in the American Office of Strategic Services. Together with Franz Weber, a Wehrmacht deserter from Tyrol, they parachute onto an Alpine glacier behind enemy lines as part of Operation Greenup.Their mission is simple to describe and nearly impossible to survive: observe German rail traffic through the Brenner Pass and transmit the information to Allied headquarters.Sheltered by Austrian villagers and resistance members, the three men establish a hidden radio station above Oberperfuss. But Fred refuses to remain safely in the mountains. Disguised first as a German officer and later as a French civilian electrician, he enters Innsbruck, questions soldiers, studies military movements, and penetrates installations the Allies believe may belong to the legendary Alpine Fortress.Every new contact makes the mission more valuable-and brings the Gestapo closer. When Fred is betrayed, captured, and tortured, his captors expect him to expose the men and women who helped him. Instead, he transforms himself from prisoner into negotiator. With American artillery approaching, German units still armed, and Innsbruck caught between surrender and destruction, Fred attempts his most audacious deception yet.Based on documented people and events, The Spy in German Uniform is a tense historical novel about disguise, courage, resistance, and the intelligence operation that helped save a city. This dual-language edition presents each English paragraph followed immediately by its German translation, allowing readers to experience the complete story in both languages.
