With the Writer's Group murders behind them, Detective John Hernandez and Professor Rebecca Randall hope to continue their personal relationship without interruption. Bella, the family matriarch, throws an engagement party for John's youngest sister. The whole family attends, including the estranged drug-dealing cousin from California. Why he shows up after a ten-year absence, no one knows, nor will they ever find out. He is dead within an hour and a half. Detective Hernandez is not allowed to investigate his own family, so Professor Randall investigates using both her amazing computer research skills and her otherworldly intuition. Professor Randall thinks she will chip away at the information until the facts reveal the murderer. Frustration sets in because the evidence is inconclusive, and the only logical person capable of killing someone is the dead victim.
