The Search for Life on Mars

Is the emergence of life, as we know it on Earth, a unique occurrence in the Universe, or is it a common event that takes place whenever the right physico-chemical conditions are present? This question has preoccupied humanity for a very long time. Its implications are not only physical but also philosophical, and even metaphysical. The MSL-Curiosity mission to Mars - our nearest neighbour, which in its early days probably experienced conditions comparable to those on Earth - is attempting to lift a corner of the veil. The author first examines the current and past conditions of the Martian environment and the traces that life might have left behind had it existed in ancient times. He then describes the observational methods employed by the MSL-Curiosity mission in an attempt to answer this question. Finally, he outlines France's contribution to this scientific endeavour. This book will appeal to those interested in the origin of life and space exploration.
