Two men have a love affair in the late 1950s. The pair meet on the set of a film being shot on location in Italy. They each tell their version in their own voices. One of them - 19 when the book begins - is from working-class Leeds in the north of England, and only recently inducted into London's furtive gay scene in an age when same sex love is illegal. The other is a stuntman and a veteran of World War Two. He is ill at ease with his stunt colleagues and troubled by his sexuality. When at last a tender relationship develops between them, it is compromised by the attitudes of the time and then threatened further when the older man is pressured into performing a perilous stunt. The camera is in place; the film is rolling. He hears them call, 'Action!'
