The sciences today are enormously powerful tools for understanding the world, and they are finite tools. They illuminate certain kinds of questions with great clarity and leave others in shadow. Dream science is no different. It has told us a great deal about the neural correlates of dreaming, the role of sleep in memory and emotional regulation, the relationship between dream content and waking experience, and the disorders that disrupt the architecture of sleep. It is on the verge of telling us considerably more. The decoding technologies described in this book will yield insights that no previous generation of researchers could access. And yet there is a limit to what this will mean - a horizon beyond which the science, however sophisticated, cannot carry us.
