The Science of Canoeing

Canoeing looks peaceful from shore, which is how canoeing tricks people. From a distance, it appears to be a gentle activity involving water, trees, reflection, and maybe a sandwich. The canoe glides across the surface like a calm thought. The paddlers look relaxed. The lake reflects the sky. A heron stands nearby like it knows something but has signed a nondisclosure agreement. Everything suggests serenity. Then you get into the canoe. At that moment, science begins. Not metaphorical science. Actual science. Balance, buoyancy, leverage, friction, drag, torque, momentum, center of gravity, fluid dynamics, material strength, weather patterns, load distribution, and the emotional instability of people who say, "Relax, I've done this before," while holding the paddle backwards. Canoeing is not merely a recreational activity. It is a floating laboratory where humans test whether confidence can replace technique. It cannot, but the experiment continues every summer.
