The Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter

The Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter by Petronius Arbiter is one of the most remarkable surviving works of ancient Roman literature-a bold and often irreverent satire that offers a vivid portrait of life during the reign of Emperor Nero. Blending prose and verse, this fragmented yet influential narrative follows the adventures of Encolpius and his companions through episodes of excess, intrigue, humor, and social commentary. Most famous for the Cena Trimalchionis (The Banquet of Trimalchio), the work provides a sharp and entertaining critique of wealth, pretension, morality, and cultural decadence in imperial Rome. Combining satire, realism, and early novelistic storytelling, The Satyricon stands as a foundational text in classical literature and the development of the Western novel. Essential for readers of Roman history, classical studies, satire, and ancient fiction, this enduring masterpiece continues to illuminate the complexities and contradictions of Roman society.
