the RIGHT TO EXPLAIN: How First Amendment Opened Doors of Law

If the law governs the people, it should at least speak in a language the people understand. At Saint Mark Community Center in Phoenix, Elena Ruiz and her volunteers do one thing only: they explain. They do not represent clients. They do not give legal advice. They help people read the papers that control their lives: eviction notices, benefits denials, debt summonses, foreclosure packets, deadlines, and forms ordinary people were never taught to read. Then a certified cease-and-desist letter arrives from the State Bar.What begins as a threat against a small community center becomes a national fight over a simple question: if the law governs the public, can the public be forbidden from explaining it?The Right to Explain is a civic legal drama about language, dignity, power, and the people who refuse to remain shut out of the systems that rule their lives.
