At the start of WW2, the Radovak family are split up. No one knows whether the others are still alive. The mother - Anastasia - with daughter in law Trishka, and Josef the farmhand, decides to join the partisans. Max, the father flies to England. The eldest son, Igor, a cavalry officer, is sentenced to death by the Russians, but escapes to France and joins the Foreign Legion. Stefan, the younger son, is in England and joins the RAF. Anna, Trishka and Josef arrive in England but discover Stefan has been shot down over the English Channel. Stefan is picked up by French fishermen and joins the resistance. In the Middle East, Igor splits from the Foreign Legion and joins a cloak and dagger unit. At the end of the war the family reunite in England, but realise that the defeat of Germany has left Poland controlled by Stalin and the USSR. Chased by Russian secret police to return to Poland, Anna and Max go into hiding. Igor and Trishka flee to Canada - where extra ordeals and surprises await them.
