In theory, the media should act as watchdogs against the abuse of political power, as defenders of justice and the views of minorities, or as advocates for social change. Yet in Brazil, are the media not rather the instrument of a political elite through which individuals exercise power over the country's government? Lea Ferno explored this question and, in her thesis, analysed the political influence of the Globo media group on Brazilian domestic politics.
