Shawn Burke, a retired television actor who portrayed television's private detective Quentin Mars, now owns and runs The Swan Theater in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. His first summer season has gone so well that there is a demand for a fall season. Looking for something that can be quickly staged, he finds Connie and Jim Wicket, who can quickly put on a popular two-person play. They arrive with several friends and ask to stay at Shawn's large home. He agrees, but when one of the friends turns up dead on the stage of the theater, Shawn finds that if he wants his fall season to go on at all, he must discover the identity of the killer. Using all of the skills he developed as Quentin Mars, Shawn enters a maze of danger and deception in order to solve a murder and save his theater.
