The Pigeon: An Abandoned History

For five millennia, the pigeon was our most essential technology. We engineered its body to be a biological larder and its brain to be the fastest telegraph on earth. From the towers of Mesopotamia to the blood-stained trenches of the Somme, we relied on this loyal partner to build empires and save thousands of human lives. Then, we invented the radio and simply walked away from the contract, rebranding a decorated veteran as urban litter. This book is a post-mortem of a relationship defined by human fickleness and architectural needles. It explores the "Digital Redundancy" that turned a high-status hero into a public nuisance, forcing an ancient ally into a life of nomadic scavenging. By examining the rise of hostile architecture and the "vermin" myth, this history challenges us to acknowledge the debt we owe to our most faithful and discarded employee.
