In 1922, Lenin personally drew up a list of some 160 'undesirable' intellectuals - mostly philosophers, academics, scientists and journalists - to be deported from the new Soviet State. Two ships sailed from Petrograd that autumn, taking these eminent men and their families away to what became permanent exile in Berlin, Prague and Paris. Shipped tells the story of the writers, journalists and scholars thrown out of their homeland. It describes the world they left behind, and the emigre communities abroad they were forced to join.
