The Northlume Library-The Death of Ivan Ilyich

How should a man live, when he knows he must die? No writer has faced that question more unflinchingly than Leo Tolstoy, and nowhere more so than in the three late masterpieces gathered here.In The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886) - often called the finest novella ever written - an ordinary judge, dying by degrees, is forced to ask whether the respectable life he built was worth anything at all, and finds the truth in the plain kindness of his servant. In Master and Man (1895), a grasping trader and his peasant are caught out overnight in a blizzard, and one of them makes a choice that redeems a life. In How Much Land Does a Man Need? (1886), a man is offered all the land he can walk around in a day.Together they are Tolstoy at his most searching - plain, terrible, and merciful - in the classic English translation by Louise and Aylmer Maude, behind an original mixed-media cover illustration by JVB Atelier Designs.
