Bol The fighter that solved the problem bleeding the Eighth Air Force to death. In April 1940 the British Purchasing Commission asked North American Aviation to build the P-40 under licence; James Kindelberger declined and offered a clean-sheet design instead. From the Anglo-American origin story and the Packard-built two-stage Merlin to the escort ranges that made daylight bombing of Berlin survivable, the Tuskegee Airmen, the aces, and the F-51's post-war career from Korea to Latin America - the definitive single-volume portrait of the aeroplane that turned the strategic air war over Europe.
