The Longest Night: A Whitfield Family Christmas

"A warm, sharp, and deeply honest story for every family that has ever been snowed in together-and come out the other side closer than they went in."Sam Whitfield is a man who relies on balance sheets, quick fixes, and GPS routing. Heading into the holidays, his marriage to Nora is suffering under a two-year quiet conflict, his teenage daughter Josie is withdrawn, his young son Charlie is caught in the middle, and he hasn't spoken to his estranged brother, Eli, since their father's funeral.Driving up to his mother Margaret's house in the mountain town of Pine Hollow for Christmas, Sam ignores a physical detour sign in favor of his phone's mapping app. What begins as a minor navigational error quickly spirals into a three-hour detour through unfamiliar valleys, a stuck tire in a ditch, dinner chili in a tiny junction town, and a series of missed warnings about Winter Storm Helena. When the family finally arrives at Margaret's green house with the crooked porch light, the physical storm outside pales in comparison to the secrets and truths waiting inside: - An Estranged Brother: Sam discovers that Eli-now 90 days sober-has quietly moved back to town and is living on Coldwater Road, directly in the path of a failing spillway gate at the nearby dam.- A Life-or-Death Rescue: As power fails and floodwaters surge, Sam must leave his comfort zone and venture into thigh-deep freezing currents with local rancher Walt Ferreira to pull Eli out of harm's way.- A Ridge-Top Sanctuary: Forced to evacuate to an abandoned fire lookout tower atop the ridge, the family spends Christmas Eve isolated together, shedding two years of silence, unmentioned grievances, and self-protective performances.Spanning the chaos of Christmas Eve through five years of healing and renewal, The Longest Night is an uplifting, humorous, and emotionally resonant portrait of small-town resilience, the hard work of showing up for the people you love, and the enduring strength of family.
