This study provides an overview of the extent to which, and the reasons why, eugenic ideas and measures adopted as part of the National Socialist 'hereditary health policy' continued into the early Federal Republic. The focus is primarily on those measures taken in the spirit of 'negative eugenics'. At the heart of the study is the 'Law for the Prevention of Hereditary Diseases in Offspring' (GzVeN), which was passed by the National Socialists on 14 July 1933 and was not repealed nationwide by the German Bundestag until 1974.
