The Light of Asia

The Light of Asia by Sir Edwin Arnold is a poetic and philosophical masterpiece that narrates the life and teachings of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha. First published in 1879, the work presents the story of the Buddha in the form of a narrative poem, blending lyrical elegance with deep spiritual insight. Arnold draws on ancient Buddhist scriptures to offer a compassionate and humanizing portrait of the Buddha's journey-from royal privilege to renunciation, enlightenment, and the founding of a path based on compassion, mindfulness, and the cessation of suffering. Written in elegant English verse, the book was one of the first major attempts to introduce Eastern spirituality to the Western world and played a significant role in popularizing Buddhism outside Asia. Rich in ethical teachings and universal wisdom, The Light of Asia remains a seminal text in the global appreciation of Buddhist philosophy and literature.
